What Are You Teaching Your Kids?

Pauline Barrett with students who have benefited from her scholarship.
Pauline Barrett's passion for philanthropy goes back to her childhood. She says her parents mentored her in a caring attitude to support those in need. That attitude has followed her through life, benefiting countless people, including students at the University of Northern Iowa.
This academic year, 30 students received the Pauline R. Barrett Endowed Scholarship. Pauline established the scholarship to support students from the Cedar Valley who want to attend UNI.
Joellen Hatchett is one of 25 students who received Pauline's scholarship in 2012-2013.
"I've wanted to be a teacher since I was a young girl," Joellen says. "I used to line up my stuffed animals and pretend that I was their teacher. When I was in junior high and high school I really enjoyed math. It made sense to me.
"I've learned that the right teacher can make all the difference in how we learn. I've been fortunate to have some great teachers. In high school, Mr. Klatty made math more than just numbers, he helped us relate to it as students. It was fun. At UNI, April Carpenter's cornerstone class helped make the transition to college easier.
"Now I want to be a math teacher so I can help other students understand and relate to math," Joellen says. "That is why I'm so grateful to Pauline Barrett for my scholarship. She helped decrease my financial burden. I don't have the stress of paying back loans, and it helps me reach my goal of becoming a teacher."
