I'm from West Des Moines and am one of six children. I have completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Northern Iowa. This year I'm working on my master's degree in career/vocational studies for special education and a minor in Spanish.

I have chosen to teach special education because of one very influential person in my life: my little brother. His name is Derek and he has Down's syndrome.

UNI Has Prepared Me for the Classroom

My education at UNI has been filled with incredible experiences. In spring 2012, I completed my student teaching in the Des Moines area and loved it. That experience, along with all the instruction from my professors, has given me the confidence and skills I need to teach in a classroom.

With the help of a scholarship, I studied in Chile this past summer. I learned so much about the Chilean culture and my own culture during that trip.

I'm really excited to be in graduate school this year, because I am ready to dive into my career and learn as much as possible so I can help my future students.

I Would Not Have Been Able to Afford College

I'm humbled each day when I think about those who have given of their time, talents and monetary resources for me to be able to have the opportunities I have had at UNI. Honestly, without scholarships, I would not have been able to afford college, nor would I have been able to study abroad. I am forever grateful.
