Touching the Present and Future

Carol Phillips

During Carol Phillips' 35-year career as a teacher and tennis coach at the University of Northern Iowa, she touched the lives of many students. As a tennis coach, Carol championed the value of respect—for one another and for opponents. She instilled in her players that they scored as a team and each player was important. In teaching future teachers, she stressed making the profession better, thinking differently with changing times and needs, and that meeting the needs of their students was a priority.

"I had the privilege of seeing the great people and teachers that many of these individuals became," says Carol. "That is the reward of teaching."

Carol's favorite quote comes from Christa McAuliffe: "I touch the future. I teach." Carol says even though she is retired, she feels it is still important to touch the future. To ensure that happens she has created a gift through her will, the Dr. Carol Phillips Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund. Recently, Carol decided she wanted to see her gift in action now, so she established an annual scholarship. Now she has the joy of meeting and getting to know her scholarship recipients.

Today, her financial support helps athletes through the Panther Scholarship Club, along with contributions to other areas of athletics. Her giving extends to Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.

During retirement, Carol enjoys participating in sports, going to wine club, card club, exercise classes and outings with friends. "Life is good," she says.

You can touch the present and the future, like Carol, with a gift to the UNI Foundation in your future plans and now through an annual scholarship. To learn more about your gift options, contact Jane Halverson at jane.halverson@uni.edu or (319) 273-4665.
