Giving Made Easy

Joanne Latta Reeves and her granddaughter

It's hard to say when Joanne Latta Reeves' connection to the University of Northern Iowa began. In fact, it's not really the right question to ask.

"UNI has always been a part of me," Joanne says. "I can't imagine not having it in my life."

For Joanne—the daughter of John S. Latta, who founded the University Book and Supply store—supporting UNI is in her blood. Her parents led by example, she says, giving generously to UNI throughout their lives.

While she didn't attend UNI herself, the Cedar Falls native has continued the family tradition by supporting the university in a number of ways, including establishing the Joanne Latta Reeves Panther Champions Scholarship for student-athletes.

Asked about her passion for Panther Athletics—according to Joanne, that, too, came naturally.

"It's osmosis, really," Joanne quips. "I love basketball and I love UNI."

Joanne has employed an easy and tax-effective way to make her impact on the university. She says donating appreciated securities, including stocks, has been an excellent tool for giving back.

"I was lucky to get some great financial advice years ago," Joanne says. "While I didn't originally invest with this intention, it's been a logical, smarter way to handle my giving."

Ultimately, Joanne says, her advice for alumni and friends of UNI is simple: Stay involved.

"To have a connection—whether that's having gone to the school, supporting UNI financially or participating in events—that's what's important," Joanne says. "It has certainly made our lives much more meaningful."
